Pakistan fires over 100 police officers for not reporting for duty

Pakistan got the opportunity to host an ICC event after three decades. The Pakistani government has made huge arrangements to organize the Champions Trophy in a very prestigious manner. Special measures have been taken without compromising on security. However, when the Punjab provincial police refused to perform security duties during the tournament, the government there took strict action. A Punjab police official revealed that more than 100 policemen who openly boycotted their duties have been dismissed.

Neglect of duties

The official said that the policemen who were supposed to provide security to the teams travelling between the Gaddafi Stadium and hotels in Lahore did not turn up for duty and some of them refused to take charge altogether. The incident came to the notice of Punjab IGP Usman Anwar , who ordered strict action against the negligent policemen. A Punjab police official said that these officers belong to different sections of the police force. The decision was taken by the higher authorities after they noticed that they did not turn up for their assigned duties on various occasions.

Causes

There is no official information yet on why the dismissed police personnel were absent from duty. But according to local media reports, they are reportedly under stress due to long working hours. That is why they have decided not to report for duty.

Terrorist threat

The Federal Communications Commission has issued a statement regarding the reports of a terrorist threat to the Champions Trophy.Minister Attaullah Tarar condemned it.He made it clear that this mega event will be held peacefully and efficiently in Pakistan. The minister said this in an interview with Geo News on Monday.

Amidst these developments, it remains to be seen how effective the Pakistani government's measures will be in maintaining security challenges and international trust. With the opportunity to host an ICC tournament coming up after almost 30 years, the Pakistani government is taking clear steps to ensure that there is no compromise on security. Preparations are underway to increase security in all major cities, especially in stadiums like Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi, during the Champions Trophy.

The recent defeats by India and New Zealand to the Pakistan cricket team and their exit from the Champions Trophy have caused great disappointment among fans. There are also claims that the police have also been absent from duty due to this.

This security dispute is likely to have a negative impact on the running of the Champions Trophy.

If international teams express concerns about security in Pakistan, there is a possibility that the matches will be held at a neutral venue.

The ICC will have to review the security situation and give the green signal to the tournament.

If some teams are unwilling to travel to Pakistan due to security reasons, the ICC will have to come up with an alternative plan.
